The Number Every Relocating Executive Asks First
Before square footage, before school rankings — executives relocating to the South Bay ask the same question first: how long is the commute? It’s the right question. Here are the actual numbers from Los Gatos to every major tech campus in Silicon Valley, with honest traffic context, not the Google Maps “leave at 3 AM” time.
Campus-by-Campus Drive Times from Los Gatos
Netflix — Los Gatos HQ: 3 minutes. Netflix is headquartered in downtown Los Gatos. If you’re a Netflix executive or senior engineer, your commute is a local errand.
Apple Park — Cupertino: 20 to 25 minutes via Highway 85 North. A straight highway run with predictable timing. Morning peak adds 5 to 10 minutes at most. Apple employees are among the most active buyers in the Los Gatos market for exactly this reason.
Nvidia — Santa Clara: 20 to 25 minutes via Highway 85 North to 280. Consistent and rarely a bottleneck. With Nvidia’s sustained growth, this corridor is increasingly relevant for senior engineers at elevated compensation.
Adobe — San Jose: 20 minutes via Los Gatos Boulevard or Highway 17. San Jose commutes from Los Gatos are genuinely short — you’re one city over.
Cisco — San Jose (Tasman): 25 minutes via Highway 85 to 101. Traffic at the 85/101 interchange can add 5 to 10 minutes in morning peak. Still very manageable.
Google — Mountain View: 25 to 30 minutes via Highway 85 North. A well-traveled route for Los Gatos residents. Off-peak, 20 minutes. Morning rush adds 10 to 15 minutes.
Meta — Menlo Park: 35 to 45 minutes via Highway 85 to 280 North. This is the longest commute on the list. On 85/280 on a hybrid schedule day, it’s a highway run — not a surface-street crawl. The buyers who’ve made this tradeoff consistently report it works.
Salesforce — San Francisco: 55 to 65 minutes to SoMa depending on bridge traffic. SF-based roles from Los Gatos work best as Caltrain commutes — see below.
Traffic Reality
All drive times above assume a realistic 8:30 to 9:00 AM departure — not 6:30 AM, not light-traffic projections. Highway 85 northbound is Los Gatos’s primary commute artery, and it outperforms 101 approaches from the East Bay. The corridor is highway-grade from Los Gatos to Cupertino with no significant surface-street segments. Off-peak or midday, subtract 5 to 15 minutes from all estimates.
The Caltrain Option for San Francisco Commuters
San Jose Diridon Station is approximately 20 minutes from central Los Gatos. From Diridon, Caltrain Express to San Francisco takes roughly 60 minutes to 4th and King, with a short connection to SoMa, the Financial District, or Mission Bay. Total door-to-door for a Salesforce or Financial District role: approximately 90 minutes, with the advantage of productive time on both legs. For executives commuting to SF two or three days per week, Caltrain transforms a difficult drive into a structured transit commute.
Why Hybrid Schedules Changed Everything
The three-day-per-week in-office norm across most of Silicon Valley’s major employers fundamentally changed the commute calculus. A 45-minute drive six to eight times per month is a different decision than five days per week. Los Gatos buyers who would have hesitated at pre-2020 commute expectations are buying confidently now. The lifestyle, schools, and community Los Gatos delivers outweigh the incremental commute time when you’re making that drive fewer than 10 times per month.
The Commute-to-Lifestyle Ratio
No comparable market offers this combination: a genuinely small-town feel, top-tier public schools, a walkable downtown, 20 to 30 minutes to the majority of Silicon Valley’s largest employers, and a housing stock that rewards early buyers. Saratoga is comparable in quality but has fewer neighborhood amenities. Palo Alto commands a 30 to 40 percent price premium for equivalent homes. Cupertino has strong schools but limited neighborhood character. Los Gatos threads the needle.
