Not every downsizing story starts with a couple planning ahead. Sometimes it starts with grief, and a house full of a lifetime that suddenly has to be dealt with all at once. This is one of those stories — and it’s a reminder of why I believe downsizing has to be handled with patience, not just efficiency.
The Situation
My client had grown up in her Los Gatos home and lived there with her elderly father for most of her life. After he passed away, she found herself facing something few people are ever prepared for: 65 years of belongings, all at once, with no roadmap for where to begin. Some of it was treasure. A lot of it was simply accumulation. All of it was tangled up with grief. Understandably, it was completely overwhelming for her.
Starting Slow, On Purpose
The first thing I told her was that we didn’t have to do this all at once, and we didn’t have to do it in any particular order except the one that felt manageable to her. We agreed to start with the garage — a contained space, physically separate from the more emotionally loaded parts of the house.
Clearing it took two separate haulers just to remove what was genuine trash. From there, we made multiple trips to Happy Dragon, a local Los Gatos thrift store that benefits children, donating items that still had life left in them. Other pieces we sold online, finding them new homes rather than letting them go to waste.
Room by Room, Item by Item
Once the garage was mostly empty, we moved into the house itself — one room at a time. This part of the process wasn’t fast, and it wasn’t meant to be. We sorted through decades of belongings together, finding new homes for the things that deserved one, and letting go, gently, of everything else. Every room carried its own memories, and I made sure she never felt rushed through any of it.
The Outcome
When it was finally done, she left the house that had held 65 years of her family’s life with just a few large plastic storage bins. It was an emotional moment — there were tears, because that’s what letting go of a lifetime and a parent looks like. But she left knowing the process had been handled with care, not haste, and that the things that mattered most had found the right place to go.
